SOCIAL SCIENTIST FOR CLIMATE AND AIR QUALITY SERVICES

About BSC:

BSC-CNS (Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación) is the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain and was officially constituted in April 2005. BSC-CNS manages MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, located at the Torre Girona chapel. The mission of BSC-CNS is to investigate, develop and manage information technology in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof and currently has over 400 staff from 41 countries. To get an idea of what it’s like to work at the BSC take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRkEii7OzRE

The aim of the Earth System Services Group (ESS) within the Earth Sciences Department is to demonstrate the ongoing value of climate prediction services, atmospheric composition and weather forecasting to society and the economy. The group actively works in identifying user needs that partly guide research in the Department. The goal is to quantify the impact of weather, climate, aerosols and gaseous pollutants upon socio-economic sectors through the development of user-oriented services. This ensures the transfer of the technology developed and the adaptation to a rapidly changing environment.

The Earth System Services Group has an interdisciplinary approach closely collaborating with all research groups within the department (Climate predictions, Atmospheric compositions and Computational Earth Sciences) and support groups at the BSC (technology transfer, communications, visualisation, education and outreach).

Context and Mission:

The ESS group is looking for a Social scientist from any nationality to design, evaluate and improve user co-design processes. Climate services research is a cutting-edge discipline that requires multiple approaches and perspectives to reach a successful user interaction. The selected candidate will study the optimal communication of uncertainty in climate and air quality predictions, the perception of climate risks and the user-scientist interaction regarding adaptation measures and vulnerability. The successful candidate will be part of a diverse and international team of scientists, communication specialists and technical experts. The successful candidate will benefit from expert training and BSC-CNS staff benefits: international multidisciplinary scientific environment and advanced applied research training. We encourage applications from highly motivated candidates with a special interest in climate and user-engagement processes.

Key Duties:

The main task of the candidate will be:

  • Perform surveys and other methods to evaluate user-engagement activities, study the impact of climate predictions in the decision making processes, make vulnerability assessments, etc.
  • Carry out user-engagement tasks within EU funded projects (EUPORIAS, PRIMAVERA, IMPREX, etc.).
  • Write reports and papers about user-engagement, vulnerability, climate information impact in the decision-making processes, and similar topics.
  • Follow up user’s feedbacks and needs raised in meetings and workshops.
  • Link with other European partners with social science background to carry out joint studies.

Requirements:

Education

  • PhD in Social sciences or at least 4 years of professional experience in the field.
  • Formation in topics related to climate, environment, air quality or renewable energies will be highly valued.

Competences

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work in a professional environment within a multidisciplinary and international team.
  • Interest in learning the basic concepts on earth sciences.

Professional Experience

  • Previous experience in user-engagement activities (interviews, surveys, etc.)
  • Previous experience in vulnerability assessments
  • Experience in climate, environment or energy topics will be valued but it is not necessary

Conditions:

The position will be located at BSC within the BSC-ES department under the supervision of the Communication specialist of the department. The contract will be for 12 months with possibility of contract renewal depending on the candidate’s performance.

Applications Procedure:

All applications must be applied in the BSC website including:

  1. A motivation letter
  2. A full CV including contact details
  3. Two reference CONTACTS
