Context and Mission

Within the Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, the Computational Earth Sciences group is looking for an intern to support the daily tasks related with the day to day activity of Earth Sciences Department users.

The Computational Earth Sciences (CES) group is a multidisciplinary team with different IT profiles that interacts closely with all the other groups of the Department. The group provides help and guidance to the scientists with the technical issues relating to their work and develops a framework for the most efficient use of HPC resources. The candidate will interact with the others members to solve issues and guide them to the right usage of the infrastructure.

Key Duties

  • Day to day end user support
  • Desktops, laptops, deployment and maintenance
  • End user care, support, consultations etc according to needs
  • Desk phones and end user computing wiring
  • Other office equipment maintenance
  • Document on the internal wiki
  • Develop scripts to automate processes

Requirements

  • Education
    • Currently studying a Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Physics, Mathematics or related discipline.
  • Knowledge
    • Previous experience in Linux and Windows administration is required.
    • Experience in maintenance of personal computers is required.
  • Competences
    • Capacity to interact and build strong relations with both atmospheric and computer scientists.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to take initiatives, prioritize the tasks and work under set deadlines.
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team.
    • Ability to learn and adapt to multiple programming languages easily.

Conditions

The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department and start as soon as possible. The contract will be for at least one year, part-time with flexible working-time, which could be extended depending on availability of funds and performance.
