Mario Acosta

Position: Leading Researcher (Group Leader)

Short Bio: Mario Acosta is a Leading Researcher and Co-Leader of the Computational Earth Sciences group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. He obtained his PhD in Information and Communication Technologies from the University of Granada in 2015, with research focused on High Performance Computing applied to numerical models. He also holds an MSc in Computer and Network Engineering from the University of Granada and a degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Córdoba.

His research lies at the intersection of High Performance Computing, computer architecture, scientific software engineering and Earth system modelling. It focuses on improving the performance, scalability, portability and energy efficiency of weather, climate, ocean and Earth system models on current and emerging supercomputing architectures. His work covers performance analysis and optimisation, model coupling and load balancing, heterogeneous CPU and GPU computing, mixed precision, numerical reproducibility, parallel I/O, data compression, workflow orchestration, digital twins, and computational energy and carbon-footprint metrics.

He coordinates ESiWACE3 and holds leadership roles in several European initiatives related to Earth system modelling, digital twins and High Performance Computing. He chairs the European HPC Centres of Excellence Council, is a member of the ENES-RI Executive Board and co-leads the CMIP Energy Consumption and Carbon Footprint Task Team.

Mario has authored several peer-reviewed publications, presented his work at numerous international conferences and workshops, and reviewed manuscripts for scientific journals. He has supervised PhD, master’s, and undergraduate students in HPC topics and is also an Associate Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).

Miguel Castrillo

Short Bio: Miguel Castrillo is Co-Leader of the Computational Earth Sciences (CES) group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). He holds an MSc in Computer Science, an MSc in Artificial Intelligence, and a BA in Geography and History.

Before joining BSC, Miguel worked as an analyst and software developer for several private companies. Since joining the CES group in 2012, his work has focused on technical projects in High Performance Computing (HPC), particularly in computational performance, scalability, and workflows for Earth system models. He has contributed to numerous international initiatives, including IS-ENES2, IS-ENES3, ESiWACE, ESiWACE2 H2020, Copernicus CMEMS 87 HPC ORCA36, and IMMERSE H2020 (as PI). Miguel currently leads or contributes to several award-winning European projects, such as Destination Earth Climate DT, EDITO Model Lab, EERIE, ESiWACE3, GLORIA, and CDRESM.

Yaquelin Samper

Short Bio: Yaquelin Samper is a Project Management Professional within the Computational Earth Sciences (CES) Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). She joined BSC in 2025 to support departmental operations and facilitate research activities, with a focus on coordination, documentation, and process optimization. Yaquelin holds a joint International Master’s degree in Global Markets and Local Creativities (GLOCAL) from the University of Glasgow and the University of Barcelona, as well as a Master of Arts in History from Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Her background combines international cooperation, education management, and diplomacy across Europe and Latin America, contributing to a multidisciplinary and globally oriented approach to research support and project coordination.
