Francesca Macchia

Short Bio: Francesca Macchia holds a MSc degree cum laude in Computer Engineering at the University of Salento (Italy), Francesca starts her research activity in the field of high-performance computing working in the Department of Engineering for Innovation of the same university. From 2013 to 2017 she worked at the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Changes (Italy), focusing on optimization and parallelization of hydrodynamic models and the design and development of a system to handle ensemble simulations and perform data assimilation in oceanic models. She is a Research Engineer in the Computational Earth Science (CES) group at the Earth Sciences department in the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), developing the workflow of the Multiscale Online Non-hydrostatic AtmospheRe CHemistry model (MONARCH) in collaboration with Atmospheric Composition group.

Gilbert Montané

Short Bio: Gilbert Montané holds a BSc in Computer Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), a MSc in Project Management from the Ramón Llull University (La Salle, URL) and a Master's degree in Meteorology from the University of Barcelona (UB). After working some years as a Software Engineer in a multinational company, he joined the Models & Workflows team (Computational Earth Sciences group, Earth Sciences department) as a Research Engineer, working on the development of the workflow to run the NMMB-MONARCH model using the Autosubmit workflow manager (Auto-MONARCH) and giving support to the Atmospheric Composition group.

Short Bio: Alba holds a Bachelor's Degree in Fundamental Physics and a Postgraduate Degree in Data Science and Machine Learning from the Universitat de Barcelona (UB). In 2023, she completed an internship with the Hadronic, Nuclear and Atomic Physics Group, focusing on machine learning for many-body quantum systems. She is currently part of the Models and Workflows Team in the Computational Earth Sciences group.

Short Bio: Breixo Soliño received a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Santiago de Compostela and a Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Utrecht. They worked as a Junior Research Software Engineer (RSE) at the Netherlands eScience Center and as an RSE for the German Aerospace Center (DLR), providing Climate Scientists with AI, Python and HPC support.

Short Bio: Bruno de Paula has a Bachelor degree in Information Systems from the Mackenzie University in São Paulo, Brazil. Prior to joining the BSC he was working on the Common Workflow Language (CWL) project hired by Curii (USA) but working from Auckland, New Zealand. Before that he worked on the Cylc workflow manager with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand, in a project funded by the UK-Met Office/Unified Model. At NIWA he also worked on other projects such as EcoConnect Java web, THREDDS/NetCDF data serving, OGC API's and ArcGIS for gridded data, Air Quality R shiny applications, web applications for citizen science projects and for sensor data, configuration management, bruker solar tracker, software security reviews, metadata and data management, and others. He joined the BSC to work with Miguel Castrillo and his team on Autosubmit and related projects as a Workflow Engineer. He is involved with several Open Source projects and is an Apache Software Foundation member.

Carles Tena

Short Bio: Carles Tena holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science (UAB) and MSc in Computational Mathematics (URV). Specialist in Python-based modelling and workflows for emissions, meteorology, and air quality forecasting. He coordinates the technical development of HERMESv3 emission models, has led the air quality forecast for Mexico City, and contributed to the CALIOPE system and national forecasts for Spain. At the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC), he supports scientists with HPC-related technical challenges and develops optimized frameworks for efficient use of computational resources. His work includes several scientific papers as co-author and the supervision of a master’s thesis.

Carmen Piñero Megías

Short Bio: Carmen is a Junior Research Engineer in the Emissions Unit, part of the Models and Workflows Team. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Barcelona (UB) and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Modelling for Science and Engineering at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Before joining BSC, she completed an internship developing an application related to neuroscience at the University of Barcelona and worked as a Python instructor for young people. At BSC, she focuses on developing Python-based models related to emissions.

Celia Ferruz

Short Bio: Celia Ferruz holds a bachelor in Applied Physics by the Universitat de Barcelona. She did an internship at the Meteorology department of UB focusing on the imaging of ceilometer data. Her final degree thesis focused on the characterization of an environmental episode due to a Saharan dust outbreak in Barcelona using different data sources. She joined BSC to work on operational air quality forecasts inside the CES group.

Damien McClain

Short Bio: Damien McClain holds a Bachelor's in biology and mathematics from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, USA. He worked in human diagnostic genetics for 3 years and then at a synthetic biology company for 5 years in Boston, USA. There he learned to code and wrote many scripts using Python to organize and manipulate thousands of samples at once in complex long-running biological processes in various biological hosts. These scripts enabled lab users to scale up their lab processes via various robots and ensured quality via experimental and process controls, as well as ensured organized data return via attaching metadata.

Short Bio: Erick Lopes holds a bachelor in Computer Science by the Mackenzie Presbyterian University and a Higher Diploma in Software Engineer by the National College of Ireland. He worked in a Workflow Management Research Project in Brazil in a project dedicated to assist the healthy system identify and support kids with special needs developing a decision making platform using a workflow tool. He has worked for 3 years as a software developer with a eCRM platform developed dedicated to assist a number of companies to manage their internal infrastructure and demands for a number of different areas.

Francesc Roura

Short Bio: Francesc Roura holds a MSc in atmospheric sciences from the university of Innsbruck (2022) and a BSc in physics from the University of Barcelona (2020). He joined BSC in July 2019 to get involved with the Decathlon project, about S2S services for the retail sector. Since 2023 he has been involved in the development of the Climate Adaptation Digital twin from the DestinE initiative. The main roles in the projects are: development of the energy-indicators use case, as well as workflow development.

Hannah E. Ross

Short Bio: Hannah obtained an integrated masters in Natural Sciences (physics and computer science) from Durham University and then did a PhD at the University of Sussex in computational astrophysics. She worked in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a postdoc in the same topic. Her research in astrophysics focused on adding new physics to massively parallel cosmological simulations to be run on HPC systems. She then transitioned to work in climate science in the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (also at Lawrence Berkeley national Lab.) Here her work focused on optimizing the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) and porting the Mellor-Yamada-Nakanishi-Niino (a moist turbulence parameterization scheme for the planetary boundary layer) from legacy Fortran to GPU capable C++. In parallel she worked in a startup, Salo Science, simulating the spread of forest fires in California. She is now a part of the Performance and Models & Workflows Teams in the Computational Earth Sciences Group.

Ivan Alsina

Short Bio: Ivan studied Physics at the University of Barcelona (UB) as an undergrate student, and then Physics MSc in the ETH Zürich. He did research as a Master Student in topics related to Quantum Computing. He joined the Earth Sciences department to work at the Models and Workflows Team (MWT) and the Data and Diagnostics Team (DDT), mainly on topics related to data streaming within climate simulation projects.

Short Bio: Laura (she/they) holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics with a specialization in Computer Science from the Complutense University of Madrid. During this time, she completed an academic internship at IMDEA Software, where she worked with cryptographic protocols. She also holds a Master's degree in Mathematical Modeling from the University of Salamanca, where she completed her master’s thesis on the coupling of three physical models for the simulation of forest fires. Short Bio: Luca Rizza holds a bachelor and a Master's in Aerospace Engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT). His research experience is in the development of a bond-based peridynamics model for fracture estimation. He worked as an Machine Learning/Algorithm engineer for MJ Engineering and Land Surveying in New York, where he developed algorithms for LiDAR/GeoSpatial survey data, as well as Computer Vision and Machine Learning models and program optimization. He joined the BSC to work on atmospheric composition tools inside the CES group.

Miriam Olid

Short Bio: Miriam Olid holds a bachelor in Environmental Science by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and Master in Meteorology by the Universitat of Barcelona (UB). She started to work as a research technician in the Deparment of Metorology of the UB. One of her main tasks was to participate in the development and maintenance of an air quality modelling system based on a meteorological model, an emission model and a photochemical model. This system, called ARAMIS, is currently working in operational. Besides, she participated in the development and implementation of the emission model included in HIREM from the methodology described by EMEP. From 2007 to 2017, she worked as a technician in the Department of Medi Ambient during the Ozone Campaigns (May-September). From 2017 she works at Barcelona Super Computing Centre as a research engineer in the Computational Earth Science group from Earth Sciences Department. She is responsible for supervising the operational runs of the MONARCH model and CALIOPE Air Quality System at BSC. Other of her tasks are interacting with computational earth science scientists to improve the performance and the reliability of the system. She has co-authored more than 10 publications.

Short Bio: Pablo Goitia holds a BSc in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Cantabria, Spain. He is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Computer Science at the same university. He joined BSC in June 2023 and, since then, has completed an internship and his Bachelor's Thesis. He is currently a Workflow Management Research Engineer in the Models and Workflows team.

Short Bio: Pradeep joined Computational Earth Science group in September 2025 and currently works as a HPC Software Engineer. His interest lies at the intersection of High-Performance Computing, High-Throughput Computing (HPC/HTC), Data Engineering, and Statistics. Previously, his work focused on large-scale data systems for experimental physics, including managing software services for gravitational wave experiment at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (LIGO, Virgo, KAGRA), and maintaining data transfer systems for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment within the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) as a software engineer at Fermilab.
